ITF-14 Barcode Generator (GS1-14 / SCC-14)

Free · no signup · runs in your browser

An ITF-14 barcode is the 14-digit GS1 code printed on shipping cartons: one packaging indicator, your company prefix, an item reference and a mod-10 check digit, carried in Interleaved 2 of 5. Type a code below and get a print-ready symbol in SVG, PNG or PDF — free, in your browser, no signup.

Type 12, 13 or 14 digits. A 13-digit GTIN-13 is converted to GTIN-14, a 13-digit payload gets its check digit, and 14 digits are validated.

Downloads work on phones too — the file lands in your Files or Downloads app.

Generate a batch from CSV

Upload a CSV, a TXT file or a pasted column of codes. Rows that cannot be turned into a GTIN-14 are listed with the reason instead of being silently dropped, and the limit is 100 codes per run so a phone can finish the job without running out of memory. Full bulk generator guide.

A header row is optional. Extra columns are fine — the parser picks the column that holds a barcode. 13-digit GTIN-13 values are converted, wrong check digits are repaired when one digit explains the failure.

Validate a 14-digit code

Most validators answer “invalid” and stop. This one tells you which digit is wrong and offers the corrected code in a click, and it converts between GTIN-13 and GTIN-14 without touching the item reference.

The check digit is the last of the 14. Paste a code and you get the position that fails, not just “invalid”.

GTIN-13 ↔ GTIN-14 conversion

A GTIN-13 identifies the retail unit. Adding a packaging indicator turns it into the carton code without touching the item reference.

Every value above is the one the generator uses. Change X in the controls and the quiet zone, bar width and canvas size follow GS1 proportions automatically.

Find your GS1 prefix and check the structure

The prefix tells you which GS1 member organisation issued the number — not which company owns it. Confirm the licence holder in GEPIR before you print a carton you plan to sell into a distribution centre.

ITF-14 questions, answered

What is an ITF-14 barcode?

An ITF-14 is the 14-digit GS1 barcode printed on shipping cartons. The digits carry a packaging indicator, the company prefix and an item reference, and the symbol is Interleaved 2 of 5 — bars encode the odd digits, spaces the even ones. It identifies a case, not the retail unit inside it.

Are ITF-14, SCC-14, EAN-14 and GTIN-14 the same thing?

Yes, for practical purposes. GTIN-14 is the data standard, SCC-14 was the older GS1 name for the shipping container code, and EAN-14 is the wording marketplaces use. All four ride in the same Interleaved 2 of 5 symbol with the same check digit, so one generator covers them.

How is the ITF-14 check digit calculated?

Take the first 13 digits, weight them 3 and 1 alternately starting from the right, add the products, and subtract the total's last digit from 10. If the result is 10, the check digit is 0. This generator does it automatically — you can type 12 or 13 digits and the 14th is filled in.

What size should an ITF-14 barcode be?

At the 100% target size the narrow element is 1.016 mm, bars are 32 mm tall, the wide-to-narrow ratio is 2.5:1 and each quiet zone is 10.2 mm. General distribution scanning accepts X down to 0.495 mm, but direct printing on corrugated below 0.635 mm is not recommended.

Do I need bearer bars on an ITF-14?

Bearer bars are strongly recommended for corrugated and for any plate-printed label. The 4.8 mm frame surrounds the symbol and both quiet zones, flush with the top and bottom of the bars, and stops partial scans caused by ink spread or a skewed print head.

Can I put an ITF-14 on a retail product?

No. Point-of-sale scanners read EAN-13 or UPC-A on the unit; an ITF-14 on a consumer pack will not scan at the till. Use the ITF-14 for the case you ship, and keep the retail GTIN-13 on the item inside.

Is this generator really free, and is my data uploaded?

It is free, including commercial use, with no account. Every symbol is drawn in your browser by JavaScript — nothing is sent to a server, so codes never leave your machine. That also means it works offline once the page has loaded.

Can I generate more than one ITF-14 at a time?

Yes. Paste a CSV or a plain list of codes and the bulk module returns up to 100 symbols as a single ZIP of SVGs, plus a cleaned CSV. You can also start from one code and let the item reference count upwards with each check digit recalculated.

Why does a printed ITF-14 fail to scan?

The usual causes are a quiet zone that got cropped, an X dimension below the 0.495 mm floor, bars printed with too much ink spread, or a check digit that disagrees with the first 13 digits. Paste the code into the validator above — it names the digit that is wrong.
